Policosanol is a natural substance extracted from the waxy coating of sugarcane stems and leaves, which is clinically shown to lower both total cholesterol and LDL bad cholesterol, as well as increasing levels of the ‘good’ type of cholesterol (HDL cholesterol). It works in similar ways to other cholesterol lowering drugs by decreasing the production of cholesterol in the body and also increasing clearance of LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream.
